Jakarta. Vice President Jusuf Kalla and spouse Mrs Mufidah Kalla attended the ceremony of the 70th Indonesian Independence Day with President Joko Widodo as the ceremony inspector. The event was held at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta today at 10am, started with the firing of cannons for 17 times.
House of Representatives (DPR) speaker Setya Novanto then read out the proclamation of independence text as recited for the first time by President Soekarno in 1945 before a team of 34 youth flag raisers, popularly known as Paskibraka, performed the red-and-white flag-raising ceremony. During the flag raising, all visitors were standing to sing the national anthem Indonesia Raya (the Great Indonesia) solemnly.
