Jakarta. In a ceremony inaugurating Kompas TV as a news television channel held at the Jakarta Convention Center on tonight, Vice President Jusuf Kalla said news televisions have significant impact on policy making.

“Not many people watch news channels. But most of those watching those channels are policy makers. That is why news channels contribute to national change,” said the Vice President.

He then added that there are now various news and entertainment programs on television. “I hope audience could wisely choose the programs they are watching,” he said.

Mr Kalla then reiterated that news channels have a challenge in how to deliver a news report swiftly and accurately, especially in a live show which does not tolerate any fault.

“You can make a correction if you find any mistake in a piece you write in newspaper, but this does not happen in television,” he said.

Concluding his remarks in the ceremony, the Vice President threw a joke on the relationship between television channels and commercial ads.

“A TV channel is said improving when it is getting boring. Meaning that it has so many commercial breaks in its program which bore the audience, but certainly satisfies the media owner,” he said.

At the end of the ceremony, the Vice President together with the Communication and Informatics Minister Rudiantara press a siren button marking the transformation of Kompas TV into a news television channel with its new slogan “Suara Indonesia” (the Voice of Indonesia).
