The Vice President Recalls Azyumardi Azra’s Figure as a World-Class Academician

Jakarta, wapresri.go.id – The Indonesian nation is again grieving the loss of one of its best Muslim intellectuals. He is Prof. Dr. H. Azyumardi Azra, Professor of State Islamic University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta and the Chairman of the Press Council who passed away on Sunday (18/09/2022).

On the passing of Prof. Azyumardi Azra, the Vice President (VP) K.H. Ma’ruf Amin expressed his deep condolences. According to the VP, the deceased was a world-class academician whose ideas and thoughts greatly enlightened the wider community.

“The late was an academic of world-calibre. His works, ideas and thoughts are very enlightening, especially on Islamic Cultural History, which is his field of expertise,” said the VP when conveying his condolences in a video broadcast, Monday (19/09/2022).

Furthermore, the VP revealed that during his lifetime, Prof. Azyumardi Azra is very responsive to the dynamics of the times and continues to contribute to the development of science.

“As an intellectual, the deceased was very responsive and contributed to the dynamics of the times, which always spread knowledge and inspires,” he said.

Lastly, the VP also prayed for the late Prof. Azyumardi Azra to get the best place in the side of God Almighty and all his works continue to benefit the community.

“May Allah the Exalted accept his deeds of worship, erase all his mistakes, and be given the most honorable place with Him. Hopefully, all of his works will continue to provide benefits for the Indonesian people,” he concluded.

For information, based on a release from the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Prof. Azyumardi Azra died due to illness at the Serdang Hospital, Selangor, Malaysia on Sunday (18/09/2022) at around 12.30 local time.

The arrival of Prof. Azyumardi Azra actually went to Malaysia to be a resource person at the International Islamic Cosmopolitan Conference organized by the Malaysian Islamic Youth Force (ABIM) in Selangor, Malaysia on Saturday (17/09/2022). However, he experienced shortness of breath and had to be rushed to the hospital while on a flight to Malaysia.

The plan is the body of Prof. Azyumardi Azra, who once served as Deputy for People’s Welfare at the Vice President’s Secretariat and Special Staff for the VP during Vice President Jusuf Kalla’s term, be buried at the Heroes Cemetery (TMP) Kalibata Jakarta on Tuesday (20/09/2022).
